Pulling into the station

May 04, 2005

Once upon a time, my mom wrote to her brother everyday while he was away from home in the Navy. He says that mail call was the best part of the day and he was crushed if the letters didn't come.

FF>> to present day. A fellow from my high school just got back from his first stint in Iraq. He posted a note on MySpace about how there were quite a few boys in his camp that did not receive a single letter or care package from home while they were over there. "It's like they were forgotten," he said.

It's true, we probably don't agree 100% with being in this war, but the fact remains that we are in it and we do have soldiers over there right now, whether they like it or not. It breaks my heart to hear about these soldiers that aren't getting mail at all while stationed so far from home.

It's addicting. And by the stack of packages I've got ready to mail out, it's hard to say no. Especially to the requests for letters from people back here in the US. I can't turn down a woman asking for an emory board and girly body spray because she's sick of using the guys' stuff and feels like she's turning into a man over there. And I can't say no to a small group of men who just want to hear kind words from people, and maybe a pack of gum.
