Pulling into the station

March 18, 2004

Welcome to the first American Idol 3 Finals recap. Its weak this week (ha) because Im not feeling so well and my efforts are half-assed on everything. Excuses, excuses Moving on. This weeks theme was Soul.

LaToya London Aint Nobody LaToya is a local gal, from Oakland. (Which, if you didnt already know, is about 5 miles from where I grew up.) She started off a little bit weak, but hey, its the first show of the Finals and shes the first one. She finished strong, a good performance.

Amy Adams You Make Me Feel Brand New While her hair and her style is growing on me, her voice isnt. She botched some notes and if I heard right, she even forgot some words in there. Nobodys perfect on the first night.

Matt Rogers Hard to Handle His voice doesnt really WOW me yet, but he works the crowd and loves the camera. It looked like he hit the notes, but he should work on singing and dancing together a little more so he doesnt sound so out of breath.

Camile Velasco Son of a Preacherman I love this song and I adore Dusty Springfield. Unfortunately, I wasnt impressed with this performance at all. She needs to take the mic off the stand and move. She didnt give any oomph to the song until the very end. She sounded a little bored, actually.

Jon Peter Lewis Drift Away He gave a good performance, although the singing itself wasnt top-notch. I think it may have been caused by the Elaine style moves he was getting into on stage. Like Matt, he needs to work on singing and dancing together so his voice doesnt get messed up by the movements.

Fantasia Barrino Signed Sealed Delivered - Big mouth and bigger talent still rings true. Her dancing made me think female James Brown!

George Huff Dock of the Bay - This song was a great pick for George. I heard one little flub on a note, but otherwise, his voice was right on. His little dip move makes me giggle.

Jennifer Hudson Baby I Love You - I like her voice, but this song wasnt so hot. She has a big presence (being tall and big hair and all), so Id like to see her move around the stage more, interact more.

John Stevens Lately - This boy is dryer than stale bread. Ol Blue Eyes Junior isnt right for this competition. No doubt, he has great talent, but its not Pop. He should consider auditioning for Rat Pack groups, because he can nail those songs. He has no emotion in pop songs and it puts you to sleep.

Leah LaBelle You Keep Me Hanging On - She reminds me a little of Julia DeMato from last season. She kind of has a good voice, sometimes. With her voice, she should work the stage a little more to hide the fact that she gave a bland rendition of a good song.

Jasmine Trias Inseperable - You dont expect that voice to come out of that person. Shes got a good voice and, with a little work, could have a good stage presence, too.

Diana DeGarmo Think - Dont let her age fool you. I was worried that being the youngest gal on the show, shed be our new Carmen. Thankfully, no. She knows how to move on stage and I noticed that her voice is far more under control this week than it was in her last performance.

Wednesday night Normally, the group medley numbers are fun and entertaining. This week, I cringed. It was that bad. We got to take a peek into the new house where the 12 finalists will be living (until they get eliminated, of course). Nice house. Did you see those beds? Talk about pure sex The show was extra long, so to fill some time in the hour, Clay Aiken made a special appearance and sang one of his new songs. Yes, you too can come in second and still make loads of money. Ruben who?

On to the important part. Safe this week are: Amy, Camile, Diana, Fantasia, George, Jasmine, Jennifer, John, Jon Peter, LaToya, and Matt. The first contestant sent home is Leah LaBelle.
